A Journey of Endurance | Preparing for the Air Force PT Test

Peter Rees

In the last 14 years, my life has been intimately tied to the rigors of the Air Force PT test. It's a biannual event that not only examines physical prowess but also tests mental resilience and unwavering commitment. In this article, I'd like to take you on a journey through my experiences, the challenges I've confronted, and the invaluable lessons I've gleaned along the way.

The Art of Balancing Fitness Routines

In the periods between tests, I deliberately keep my fitness routine light. It's a deliberate choice to avoid overexertion and burnout. Two runs a week and one lifting session provide a maintenance regimen. But when the test looms closer on the horizon, my routine shifts. I increase my running days to five times a week while maintaining one lifting session. Sundays, however, offer a much-needed respite, coinciding with the base gym's closure.

Mental State: The Unseen Challenge

One aspect that often goes unnoticed is the shifting landscape of my mental state in tandem with the changes in PT standards and the Air Force's use of them. When I enlisted in 2009, the tests were demanding but didn't carry significant weight. They merely showed up on annual performance reports as a minor factor in the Air Force's daily operations. However, times have changed, and fitness assessment results have become a critical force shaping tool.

The stress levels and anxiety surrounding these tests have surged. A week before testing, I find myself grappling with overwhelming stress, even though I've consistently proven my capabilities year after year. My history of performance offers no solace to my mind or body.

Strategies for Success

To navigate these challenges, I've developed strategies to ensure I'm at my best come test day. One critical aspect is dietary adjustments. I modify my diet to ease the discomfort in my uneasy stomach, making sure I'm nourished without any unwanted surprises on test day.

Supplements also play a role in my preparation. These supplements aid in recovery, helping to keep my body in peak condition. I can suggest some supplements for recovery and mental well-being:

Recovery Supplements:

Protein Powder: High-quality protein supplements, such as whey or plant-based protein, can aid in muscle recovery and repair after intense workouts.

BCAAs (Branched-Chain Amino Acids): BCAAs, including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, can help reduce muscle soreness and promote muscle recovery.

Creatine: Creatine is known to enhance muscle strength and increase exercise performance, particularly during high-intensity, short-duration activities.

Fish Oil (Omega-3 Fatty Acids): Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness.

Mental State Support Supplements:

Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that may help reduce stress and anxiety while enhancing resilience to stress.

Rhodiola Rosea: Rhodiola is another adaptogenic herb that can help improve mental clarity, reduce fatigue, and enhance mood during times of stress.

Magnesium: Magnesium plays a crucial role in regulating mood and reducing stress. A magnesium supplement may help support overall mental well-being.

The Upcoming Challenge:
As I prepare to face the Air Force PT test once again, the intensity of my training and the weight of expectations continue to mount. The lessons I've learned in the last 14 years have shaped me into a stronger, more resilient individual, but the test remains an ever-evolving challenge. The mental and physical toll it takes is undeniable, but it's a crucible that I willingly step into.

My next test is just a month away, and the stakes have never been higher. Will I be able to maintain the level of performance that I've worked so hard to achieve? Will the strategies I've honed over the years prove effective once again?

As the clock ticks down, and the test date approaches, I find myself on the brink of another trial, both physically and mentally. The outcome is uncertain, and the pressure is immense. But this is the path I've chosen, the path of unwavering commitment and relentless dedication.

Stay tuned for my next update, where I'll reveal whether I conquer this challenge or face yet another hurdle in my journey. The adventure continues, and the next chapter promises to be the most demanding yet.

To be continued...
