How to Train for Perfect Pushups on the PT Test

Pushups aren’t something you just suffer through. They’re something you prepare for. Whether you’re gunning for your first pass or chasing a perfect score, this part of the PT test is absolutely trainable, if you train smart.

I max the pushup portion of the Air Force PT test every time. Not by hammering out endless sets or going until failure. I do it by treating pushups like a skill. Every session has a purpose. Every rep has a reason.

Here’s how I break it down:

**Hand release pushups** build strength and control. Dropping all the way down, letting your chest rest on the ground, then driving back up with tension is key. There’s nowhere to hide in that movement. These reps develop clean power from the floor.

**Form-focused pushups** are about staying test-legal. I slow things down and make sure every rep would pass under a strict grader. This is about control, alignment, and eliminating wasted motion. No bounce. No worm. Just locked-in mechanics.

**Time-based pushups** are where pacing comes in. I start with 20 to 30 second intervals at my target test tempo and gradually work up to 45 or 60 seconds. This helps me manage my output on game day. No burnout. No guesswork. Just a rhythm I’ve drilled into muscle memory.

To round it out, I mix in **foot-elevated pushups** and **elbows-tucked pushups**. These aren’t tested, but they add stability, variation, and body awareness. I don’t build workouts around them, they’re just in the rotation to keep things sharp.

I train pushups three to four times a week. Not to break myself, but so that when test day comes, I don’t even have to think about it. I’m not worried about the clock. I’m cruising, done with time to spare.

Most people overdo it. They go big, get tired, and then fall off the plan. That’s how you stay mid-pack. Instead, train like someone who wants to dominate the test. Be consistent. Be specific. Know exactly what you're building.

That’s what we stand for at Class 5. No empty hype. No wasted effort. Just gear that fits your grind and holds up when it matters. Whether you’re prepping in the garage, the gym, or the corner of a hotel room on TDY, our apparel shows up with you.
